CLEVELAND, OH — A 14-year-old boy was shot by a Cleveland police officer during an investigation into car break-ins on December 15, 2024. The incident occurred when officers from the third district vice unit observed a vehicle with three occupants at a vacant home. As police approached, the teenagers fled the scene.
Incident Details
- Initial Encounter: Officers spotted a Kia Sportage with three individuals near a vacant property. Upon approach, the occupants fled, prompting a search.
- Second Encounter: The stolen vehicle was later found parked again, with the 14-year-old asleep in the driver’s seat. When officers attempted to engage, the teenager awoke, put the car in drive, and collided with a police vehicle and a garage.
- Shooting: As the boy drove toward the officers, one officer discharged his firearm, striking the teenager in the shoulder. The boy received medical attention and has since been discharged from the hospital.
Investigation and Findings
- Recovered Firearm: A firearm was discovered inside the vehicle.
- Prior Incidents: The teenagers involved had previously removed electronic monitoring devices.
- Officer Status: The officer who fired the shot has been placed on administrative leave, following standard protocol.
