The Gravel Pit Celebrates New Chapter in Painesville Township

A beloved local boutique has found a new home in Painesville Township, bringing a unique shopping experience to the area. The Gravel Pit, owned by Darlene O’Donnell, recently relocated from Fairport Harbor, where it had operated for more than a decade.

The store held a mermaid-themed spring open house on April 5, where customers filled the parking lot and browsed the store’s collection while owner Darlene O’Donnell and her family showcased the store’s range of boutique goods.

The shop’s new location at 1968 North Ridge Road features an impressive inventory of specialty items including Great Lakes-themed products, wood and metal goods from local vendors, artistic bags, pottery, soaps, soy candles, and jewelry.

“We have been hustling,” explained O’Donnell, who is part of four generations who’ve run the shop. “We want to have the same vibe as the old store.” The family discovered they needed to relocate during the holiday season last year and have been working tirelessly to prepare the new space.

The shop isn’t just for women, despite being woman-owned. “Even though it’s a girl-owned store, it’s not a girly-girl store,” O’Donnell noted. The business plans to expand its men’s offerings with specialty gift items like burger presses and sweatshirts.

The store’s unique selection is what draws customers, according to O’Donnell. “We have retail. We have local artists. We could have anywhere from eight to 18 artisans,” she said. Many of these items are handmade and can’t be found on Amazon or in typical retail stores.

The business originated from the family’s creative tendencies. “We are always remodeling or at each other’s house making something,” O’Donnell explained. After encouragement from friends who suggested they sell their creations, discussions with her daughter and sister resulted in opening the shop.

The store has maintained its traditional schedule of closing during the first quarter of the year and reopening in April, though this year’s opening was particularly significant with the move to the new location.

For shoppers looking for unique gifts or distinctive home décor items with a local touch, The Gravel Pit offers a refreshing alternative to mass-market retail. Regular store hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, with special Sunday hours as well.
