Hudson Board Addresses Budget Challenges at April Meeting

The Hudson School Board met Monday evening at the Hudson High School Media Center to continue discussions on the district’s ongoing financial challenges and next steps following the April 1 referendum.

Board members reviewed the current budget situation as the district navigates declining enrollment trends and funding constraints. Based on projections that include wage increases, health benefits, and student enrollment figures, the district could face a budget deficit ranging from just under $7 million to over $9 million by 2028-2029 without additional measures.

Superintendent Dana Andrews presented an updated financial forecast, noting that staffing adjustments through retirements have helped prevent layoffs thus far. The district continues to evaluate operational efficiencies as they implement the budget for the upcoming school year.

The board also addressed property consolidation efforts, with the Underwood property sale proceeding as planned and the District Offices on Brakke Drive being prepared for relocation to available space at Hudson Middle School.

Monday’s meeting coincided with the start of spring AIR testing across district schools, with Board President Jamie Johnson acknowledging the efforts of staff and students during this assessment period.

The board discussed upcoming community engagement initiatives aimed at maintaining transparent communication with residents about the district’s financial position and educational priorities.

Public comments included concerns about preserving educational quality while managing necessary budget adjustments. Several parents spoke about the importance of maintaining reasonable class sizes and supporting both core academic and enrichment programs.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 12 at 7:00 PM at the Hudson High School Media Center.
