Cleveland’s renowned youth performing chorus, The Singing Angels, is experiencing a remarkable renaissance as it prepares to enter its 61st year of musical excellence this May. As Northeast Ohio’s first and only stand-alone youth performing chorus, the organization has built an extraordinary legacy that now combines rich history with exciting new developments.
Upcoming Spring Concert in Independence
The Singing Angels will present their 61st Annual Spring Benefit Concert on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at 3:00 PM. The concert will take place at the IMS Auditorium, located at 6111 Archwood Road in Independence, Ohio. Tickets are priced at $30 for adults (18+), $15 for children ages 6-17, and free admission for children 5 and under. Those interested in auditioning to become a Singing Angel qualify for a free ticket to this performance.
“For 60 years, The Singing Angels has made headlines across Northeast Ohio, the United States, and the world having performed in over 38 countries, and for multiple Popes, Presidents, and stars,” according to organization representatives. Their mission remains steadfast: “to encourage, foster, and cultivate positive development by engaging youth from all communities in quality music and performing arts education that teaches discipline, builds confidence, and provides a strong foundation for life.”
The chorus’s motto—”Make Music, Make Friends, Make a Difference”—continues to guide their work as they prepare to celebrate their 61st year of “delivering family-friendly music, uplifting entertainment, and a celebration of cultural diversity – all while inspiring the citizens and leaders of tomorrow.”
What makes this moment particularly significant is the powerful revival underway, led by a dedicated group of alumni. Following a period of declining enrollment and uncertain direction, these former Angels have committed themselves to rebuilding the organization while honoring the enduring vision of founder Bill Boehm.
The past five months have seen remarkable progress, including securing a new office space that serves as a living archive of the organization’s impressive history, establishing a new rehearsal location in a thriving community, and adding six professional music directors and dance choreographers to their team. The organization promises many more exciting developments are on the horizon.
The chorus operates from their rehearsal space on the campus of Urban Community School in Ohio City, though membership is open to children from any school district or city in Northeast Ohio, ages 8-18. Rehearsals are held Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 11:30-3:30 p.m.
Parents interested in enrollment should note that semester costs are $450, with financial assistance available from donors. A uniform investment of approximately $100 is also required (not purchased each semester). While fundraising opportunities are available to offset costs, participation in fundraising is not mandatory.
Auditions to join The Singing Angels are ongoing and can be scheduled at the convenience of prospective members. Auditions require only a short clip of the applicant’s song choice.
The organization encourages community members to become “guardian angels” by following them on social media or signing up for emails to assist with the revival of this Cleveland icon.
