The Macedonia City Council unanimously approved two significant infrastructure initiatives during Thursday’s meeting, pushing forward plans to resurface a portion of Ledge Road and construct a badly needed new service department facility.
Council President Jeff Garvas presided over the May 8th meeting in Mayor Nicholas Molnar’s absence, with all council members present for the votes on Resolution 32-2025 and Ordinance 33-2025.
Ledge Road Phase Two Approved
City Engineer Joe Gigliotti presented plans for the second phase of Ledge Road improvements, explaining that the project would cover the section between the railroad bridge and North Bedford Road. The estimated $225,000 project will be fully funded through Summit County permissive license tax funds, requiring no additional city budget allocation.
“We’re going to be paving the first part very soon, starting later this month or even as soon as next week,” Gigliotti noted. “Hopefully when the first part is done we can follow right up with the second part of Ledge Road.”
When questioned about the railroad bridge, Gigliotti confirmed that while the bridge itself won’t be widened, the paving will extend underneath it.
Service Department Facility Takes Major Step Forward
In a more substantial development, council passed emergency Ordinance 33-2025, reauthorizing the design-build process for a new service building and salt dome at 9150 Valley View Road, the former aerosol property the city acquired through donation.
The legislation allows the city to engage GPD Group as its criteria architect/engineer, enabling preliminary design work before selecting a design-build contractor through a competitive process. This represents a restart of efforts that began in 2021 at a different location.
Service Director Daniel Wilson expressed his gratitude: “This is a project that we’re really excited about and we really need desperately as far as our facilities go. I’m excited to see a groundbreaking in 2025.”
Department Heads Share Updates
Several department leaders provided important community updates:
- Parks & Recreation: Sam Edgar announced the May 17th family fishing day at Longwood Lake with free fishing poles for participating children, coinciding with the citywide garage sale weekend.
- Building Department: Commissioner Monaco warned residents that high grass enforcement begins Monday, with escalating penalties for repeat violations.
- Police Department: Chief Yapovich highlighted National Police Week (May 11-17) and noted three Macedonia officers are participating in the Police Unity Tour bicycle ride to Washington DC, honoring fallen officers including Macedonia’s Gary Pastor, who died in the line of duty in 1986.
- Engineering: Multiple road projects will commence simultaneously, including six city streets and ODOT work on Route 82 and State Route 8.
The meeting included the annual Northfield-Macedonia Cemetery Board meeting, where the 2025 budget was approved with Macedonia’s contribution remaining steady at $71,614.95. The cemetery serves four communities and is exploring adding a columbarium for cremation interments.
Council canceled its next scheduled meeting due to Nordonia High School graduation.
