Aurora has officially recognized Wayside Workshop for reaching 40 years in business, honoring the longโtime local shop for its contribution to the community and local economy.
On November 15, 2025, Mayor Ann Womer Benjamin presented a proclamation to owners Ken and Jane Ulmer, congratulating them on four decades of operating Wayside Workshop in Aurora. The recognition highlighted the storeโs role as one of the cityโs longโstanding specialty retailers.
Wayside Workshop opened in 1985, gradually growing into a goโto destination for crafts, hobby supplies, and seasonal dรฉcor. Over the years, the shop has added new product lines, hosted workshops, and participated in community events, adapting to changes in retail while keeping its focus on personal service and niche items that are harder to find in bigโbox stores or online.
City officials noted that businesses like Wayside Workshop help define Auroraโs identity as a community with strong locally owned shops, not just national chains. Surviving for 40 years in retailโthrough economic cycles, competition, and the rise of eโcommerceโwas cited as a significant accomplishment.
The proclamation also underscored how longโtime businesses support local employment, draw repeat customers from surrounding communities, and often partner with schools, churches, and civic groups on fundraisers and events. Wayside Workshop has been part of that pattern, participating in local promotions and contributing prizes and materials for various community activities over the years.
Residents who want to support the milestone can do so simply by shopping local and keeping independent stores like Wayside Workshop in mind for gifts, projects, and holiday purchases.
