Gates Mills Police Manage Rink Disruptions and Traffic Safety

GATES MILLS, Ohio – The Gates Mills Police Department maintained an active presence throughout the final week of February, addressing a range of community safety issues from disorderly conduct to extreme traffic violations. The primary focus of the Gates Mills Police during this period included de-escalating tensions at local sporting events, assisting motorists during inclement weather, and enforcing strict village ordinances regarding speed and outdoor fires.

Gates Mills Police Respond to Unruly Parents at Gilmour Ice Rink

On February 21, an off-duty officer working a detail at the Gilmour Ice Rink called for backup from road officers to stand by inside the facility. The request was prompted by reports of unruly parents during a youth event. Officers remained on-site to provide a deterrent, ensuring the situation did not escalate into further disruption. No arrests were made, and the event concluded without additional incident.

Extreme Speeding Violation Recorded on Mayfield Road

High-speed traffic enforcement remains a critical priority for the Gates Mills Police to ensure the safety of the village’s thoroughfares. On February 23, a vehicle owner from Cleveland Heights was cited for traveling 102 mph westbound on Mayfield Road. The violation was captured by a Mayfield Road speed camera. This enforcement highlights the department’s zero-tolerance policy for excessive speeds that endanger local residents and commuters.

Fire Safety and Community Assistance Calls

The department handled several other safety and service calls throughout the week:

  • Open Burning Violation: On February 25, an officer was flagged down regarding open burning at a Fox Hill residence. The Gates Mills Police and Fire Department discovered contractors burning materials in a small, contained fire. Because Gates Mills prohibits most open burning of residential or construction waste, the fire was extinguished, and the contractors were formally advised of the local ordinance.
  • Winter Weather Rescue: On February 22, a 911 call was received from a female motorist who became stuck on the Wilson Mills hill due to icy weather conditions. Officers responded to the scene and successfully assisted the driver up the hill.
  • Warrant Notification: On February 27, at the request of the Ashtabula County Medical Examiner, officers visited a Berkshire residence to facilitate contact between a resident and the examiner’s office.
  • Domestic Dispute: On February 28, officers mediated a verbal dispute between a father and son at a Hillcreek residence. The disagreement, centered on family matters, was resolved through officer intervention without further conflict.
