Gates Mills Police Respond to Runaway Truck, Hit and Run, Equipment Theft

Gates Mills police handled a mix of calls this week, ranging from a runaway cement truck on Mayfield Road to a hit and run involving two mailboxes and a stop sign. Officers also assisted a utility worker, checked on a possible mental health crisis, and took a theft report from a landscaping company. Solicitor Warned of No Solicitation Ordinance On 8/3, a Chartley Road resident reported a roofing solicitor knocking on her front door to ask about providing services. A responding officer spoke to the man and advised him of the village's no solicitation ordinance. Officer Escorts CEI Worker to Long Driveway On 8/4, an officer was flagged down by a CEI worker requesting an escort to a Village Trails home because of its long driveway. Assistance was rendered. Welfare Check Requested After Crisis Line Text On 8/5, New Mexico State Police called requesting a welfare check on a possible Battles Road resident who may have texted a crisis line while experiencing a mental health crisis. Officers confirmed no resident with the name provided lived at the address. New Mexico police stated the unknown person had texted their crisis line. Cement Truck Brakes Fail on Mayfield Road On 8/5, a loaded cement truck traveling eastbound on Mayfield Road experienced brake failure and was unable to stop near River Road. The driver slowed while descending the hill and struck the curb to help bring the truck to a stop. Officers closed the road briefly while the driver safely backed the truck down the hill. No accidents occurred, and the truck was removed from the roadway. Hit and Run Damages Mailboxes and Stop Sign On 8/6, an unknown vehicle traveling on Berkshire left the road and struck two mailboxes and a stop sign before leaving the scene. The driver left behind a passenger side mirror. Police located the vehicle with help from a Flock Camera and found the driver working nearby as a contractor. A 45 year old Burton man was cited for failure to control. A report was taken. Landscaping Company Reports Equipment Theft On 8/7, the owner of a landscaping company reported a theft after workers called to report that a backpack blower and a weed trimmer were stolen from a parked trailer while the crew was working at a Dorchester residence. A report was filed, and the investigation is continuing.
