Community — Aurora

A free estate planning workshop in Aurora on August 31 will address diverse life stages, from young adults to older couples, emphasizing the importance of wills for all. Registration required.

Northeast Ohio residents looking to get their affairs in order have a free opportunity later this month. The Portage Foundation and Aurora Schools Foundation are hosting WILL Power: Estate Planning for Real Life on August 31 at 7 p.m. at the Kohanski Conference Center in Aurora. The event is free and open to the public, though registration is required. What the Workshop Will Cover Attorney Meredith Simmons of Simmons Law Office will lead the workshop. She plans to start by explaining what a Will can and cannot do, along with clearing up common misconceptions people have about them. From there, the presentation will dig into how estate planning looks different depending on where someone is in life. Topics will include young single adults, couples without children, blended families, older couples with adult children, unmarried long term couples, and individuals who are divorced or widowed. Organizers built in time throughout the session for attendees to ask questions. Why Organizers Say It Matters Janice Simmons Mortimer, executive director of the Portage Foundation, said the goal is to make estate planning feel relevant no matter someone's age or financial situation. "Estate planning isn't just something to think about when you're older or when you have significant assets," Simmons Mortimer said. "Our lives and families take many different forms, and this workshop will help people understand how a Will can fit into their own unique circumstances." How to Register Space is limited and registration is required. Interested residents can sign up at portagefoundation.org/events or by calling Heidi at (330) 470-8950.
