Two OVI Arrests, Stolen Firearm Among Northfield Village Police Reports

Northfield Village Police in Summit County logged a wide range of calls between Aug. 11 and Aug. 24, from impaired driving arrests to an ongoing investigation into unlawful sexual conduct with a minor. Several incidents again centered on Northfield Park Racino, a frequent source of medical and theft related calls in the village. Below is a breakdown by category, with the most recent call in each group listed last. Impaired Driving Arrests Officers pulled over a vehicle leaving Northfield Park Racino in the early hours of Aug. 21 after a report of an intoxicated driver. The vehicle left before the officer arrived and was later stopped for a marked lanes violation. The driver stopped field sobriety testing partway through and was arrested for OVI after a breath sample came back at .184. He also received citations for a prohibited blood alcohol content and an open container violation and was sent to Stow Municipal Court. A second arrest followed on Aug. 22, when an officer conducting traffic enforcement on Ledge Road watched a pickup truck fail to yield to an emergency vehicle responding to a call from another agency. The stop that followed led to an OVI arrest and a citation for failing to yield to a public safety vehicle. The driver was given a mandatory court date and released to a sober party. A related call came earlier, on Aug. 11, when officers found three young people in a parked vehicle near the Racino with open alcohol containers. One was unresponsive and taken to the hospital, while the other two were cited for underage possession and an open container violation. The hospitalized occupant returned to the station that evening and was also served a summons into Stow Municipal Court. Theft, Burglary and Property Crime A juvenile was arrested Aug. 20 after officers found a stolen firearm inside a suspicious vehicle parked at the Sunset Motel. The juvenile was taken to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center. Vehicle break ins were reported twice on Aug. 17. Officers first responded to Cranbrook Drive for a theft from a vehicle, and a nearby resident in the Coventry area came forward with a similar report. Separately, two vehicles on Rosewood Avenue were found to have been gone through overnight, though the owners later said nothing was missing. A missing street sign on Kennedy Boulevard turned out to be theft rather than routine removal. City workers confirmed on Aug. 15 that they had not taken the No Parking On Hill sign, and police classified it as stolen for record keeping purposes. Two theft reports also came from the Racino. On Aug. 21, a woman said her Ray Ban sunglasses had been taken nearly two weeks earlier, though Racino staff told police they could not investigate. On Aug. 23, a reported voucher theft led investigators to a suspect, and the matter was resolved through restitution with no charges filed. Rescue Squad and Medical Calls Medical assists made up a steady share of the department's workload. A woman fell in a restroom at the Racino on Aug. 11, and a man suffered a fall related medical episode on Northfield Road two days later. Both were taken to area hospitals. A 14 year old suffered a head injury on Roosevelt Drive on Aug. 16 and was transported by EMS after developing a hematoma. Two days later, an elderly woman was found on the ground near North Plaza Drive, apparently after lying there since the previous Sunday, and was taken to Southpoint Hospital. More falls followed at the Racino later in the month. A woman was found unconscious there on Aug. 19 and treated by fire department medics. An intoxicated elderly man fell trying to get into his car on Aug. 23 and was released to a sober party after medical clearance. On Aug. 24, a woman tripped outside the property, cutting her nose and hands, but declined treatment and left on her own. Investigations Still Open Two cases remain under investigation as of the latest report. Police began looking into a report of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in Northfield Village on Aug. 18 after receiving initial information. No further details have been released. Separately, officers met with Racino security on Aug. 21 after a bomb threat was made against an employee there. That investigation is also continuing. Additional Calls A hit and run of a different kind unfolded on Steeple Chase Run on Aug. 16, when a vehicle struck an electrical component and the driver initially left the scene. The driver later came to the police department and admitted involvement, and no charges were filed. On Aug. 24, a resident came to the station over a custody dispute. Police determined the issue was civil in nature and referred the person to civil court.
