Ohio Mobile ID now available on Google Wallet for Android users

Ohio residents with an Android phone can now add their driver's license or state ID to Google Wallet, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles announced this week. The digital option gives Ohioans a secure companion to their physical credential rather than a replacement for it. Officials stressed that anyone who adds a Mobile ID to their phone should still carry the physical card with them. "Ohio is proud to announce this latest innovation that simplifies access to BMV services," Governor DeWine said. "Ohio Mobile ID in Google Wallet is now the latest in a long line of new features that save time and make it more convenient for Ohioans to interact with the BMV." How the digital ID works Users control what information gets shared each time the ID is displayed. Digital IDs are encrypted on the device and protected by personal authentication, and they can be deleted remotely if a phone is lost or stolen. "Ohio is excited to roll out the next phase of our Mobile ID program, expanding it to all Ohioans," said Charlie Norman, Registrar of the Ohio BMV. "Ohioans have been asking for an Android solution, and we are pleased to deliver it. Secure identity is foundational to our mission at the Ohio BMV, and we have spent the last several years designing this program to safeguard Ohioans' privacy while providing cutting edge convenience." Mobile IDs can be presented to verify age or identity at select businesses and venues statewide, in many state buildings, at all TSA checkpoints nationwide, and at Ohio's casinos. The credential only works with readers built to decrypt it, similar to contactless payment technology at checkout. Adding an ID to Google Wallet To set up a Mobile ID, users open the Google Wallet app or download it from Google Play. From there, they select "Add to Wallet," choose "ID Card," select "Ohio," and follow the identity verification steps. Participation is voluntary and free. The program follows national and international privacy, security, and interoperability standards, meaning Ohio's Mobile ID can also be used in other states that support the technology.
