53 Northeast Ohio Seniors Named OHSAA Scholar Athletes

Fifty three graduating seniors from Northeast Ohio high schools have been named recipients of the Ohio High School Athletic Association's Scholar Athlete Scholarship Program. Each honoree receives a $1,000 award to put toward college. Statewide, the OHSAA and its six district athletic boards awarded $198,000 to 198 seniors this year. The Northeast District list includes students from Twinsburg, Solon, Hudson, Stow Munroe Falls, Chagrin Falls Kenston, Canal Fulton Northwest, Peninsula Woodridge and dozens of other communities across the region. How the Scholar Athlete Program Works Recipients are chosen through a point system that credits grade point average, class rank, community service, varsity letters earned and athletic honors. Special committees within each of the OHSAA's six athletic districts select the winners, and the number of scholarships awarded per district depends on how many schools sit within that district's boundaries. Students who already received athletic scholarships from NCAA Division I or II schools, or who were appointed to a military academy, are not eligible for the award. “These scholar athletes represent the very best of education based athletics,” OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute said in a statement announcing the awards. Beyond the Scholarships Separately, the OHSAA sent $1,250 to every member high school this year, a combined total of just over $1 million. That money comes from the association's Athletic Enrichment Fund, created in 2023 to help schools cover equipment, uniforms, transportation to games, officials and efforts to improve sportsmanship among students and fans. Those enrichment funds are distributed to all member schools and are separate from the individual scholar athlete awards listed below. Over the past three years, the OHSAA has awarded a combined $598,000 to graduating seniors through the college scholarship program, with 2024 and 2025 marking the two highest totals in the award's 32 year history.
