Community — Avon

Avon Police and Fire Departments square off in annual charity softball game on Sept. 27 to support Prayers From Maria Foundation. Tickets are $5, with $1 from each sale going to childhood cancer patients.

AVON, OH — On Sept. 27, ForeFront Field will host the annual Battle of the Badges softball game. Batting practice starts at 11 a.m., and the game begins at noon. Each year, the Avon Police Department and Avon Fire Department meet on the field for a friendly rivalry match. Bragging rights go to the winning team until the next matchup. This year, the game supports the Prayers From Maria Foundation, a foundation based in Avon that serves children who suffer from or have died from brain tumors. The foundation provides support to childhood cancer patients and works to spark hope for others fighting the disease. A Friendly Rivalry With a Cause Tickets cost $5 for general admission, and $1 from every ticket sold goes directly to Prayers From Maria. "Avon Police vs. Avon Fire: One City. One Great Cause. A Year's Worth of Bragging Rights. They're used to bringing the heat. We're used to handling it," Avon Police Chief Daniel N. Fischbach said. "I hope they don't run the bases as slow as they respond to a call," Officer Justin Murray said. A Cause Close to Home Vic Gregovits, president of the Lake Erie Crushers and ForeFront Field, said the rivalry draws attention to a cause that matters to the whole community. "It's always a friendly rivalry with the Avon Police and Fire Departments, but, ultimately, this is for a great cause, and there is no better cause that's right here in our community than Prayers From Maria," Gregovits said. "We hope to get a big crowd so we can raise valuable funds for this local foundation." How to Attend Tickets to the Battle of the Badges are available at https://bit.ly/AvonBadges2026 .
