Aurora Officers Handle Assault Arrest, Scam Losses and Roadway Crashes Over Two Week Stretch

Assault and Domestic Incidents A man was taken into custody on Aug. 31 following a domestic assault on Moneta Avenue. According to police records, the victim ran to a nearby gas station after being struck and pinned against a wall. Officers cleared the residence, took a statement and provided the woman with a victims rights packet before booking the suspect. Harassment cases also filled several days on the log. Staff at a business on North Aurora Road called on Aug. 28 after a man grew upset over a canceled appointment and threatened to show up regardless. Nervous employees stayed on the line while dispatch tracked the man through records, though officers found no direct threats of violence once they made contact. Three more harassment reports followed in early September. A woman visited the station on Sept. 2 with saved messages documenting threats from a former partner. A separate caller on Sept. 3 asked for extra patrols at her home after receiving a threatening call the day before. Then on Sept. 4, a Walnut Ridge Trail resident reported ongoing harassment from a family member targeting both her and her mother. A related complaint on Aug. 29 involved a man accusing his ex of harassment through social media posts. Traffic and Roadway Response Police were dispatched to West Garfield Road on Aug. 25 after witnesses believed a teenager had been struck by a car near a local coffee shop. Officers determined the teen had been riding an electric bike and made contact with a parked sedan while riding along the sidewalk. He was uninjured, and the case was closed after follow up. A hit and run on Aug. 30 sent an officer driving a resident through the surrounding streets to pinpoint where her car had been sideswiped. The search traced back to an apartment complex parking lot near North Chillicothe Road, though the suspect vehicle, described as a dark colored sedan, was never located. Officers separately assisted a man who fell and struck his head at a nearby grocery store during the same response window. An OVI arrest closed out the traffic related calls on Sept. 5. A tip from a neighboring jurisdiction alerted Aurora officers to a car swerving across lanes near the city limits. Officers located the vehicle, conducted field testing and arrested the driver. Theft, Fraud and Financial Crimes A retail theft on Aug. 29 was captured on store video along South Chillicothe Road. Employees described the suspect as a man in a white hat, white shirt, khaki shorts and black slides, but a search of the surrounding area did not turn him up. Financial crimes also surfaced twice in the reporting period. A business owner reported on Sept. 2 that he had been defrauded of 23500 dollars after believing he was purchasing used medical equipment. Two days later, a separate resident discovered an unauthorized withdrawal from his bank account and filed a report at the station. Mental Health and Welfare Calls Staff at a care facility on South Chillicothe Road called for help on Aug. 27 after a 77 year old resident attempted to wheel herself into the road during an episode of altered mental status. She was transported for further evaluation. Officers also assisted a woman on Aug. 31 who had left a residence on foot without shoes following an argument. Passersby found her walking nearby and brought her to the station, where she requested a medical evaluation. Additional Reports A death investigation on Brandon Circle began Aug. 27 after a man had not been heard from for two days. His best friend entered the home to check on him and found him deceased. A trespassing case on North Aurora Road involved a woman accused of photographing patients through windows at a medical facility. Officers located and identified her before advising her of criminal trespass; a records check also turned up an expired concealed carry permit. A civil dispute over a missed child custody exchange was reported near New Castle Drive on Aug. 29, and a Walnut Ridge Trail property sustained damage on Aug. 31 when a delivery truck backed into a building wall. Rounding out the log, a Moneta Avenue resident reported a neighbor throwing what he described as dynamite near his property on Sept. 6, though officers confirmed the area was safe after two checks. A generator running late into the night drew a noise complaint on Aurora Hudson Road on Sept. 8, resolved once the resident powered down for the evening. Officers also picked up an evidence kit from a hospital on Sept. 8 in connection with a reported sexual assault, with no further details released.
