Ohio Rail commission approves grants for track projects in Richland, Guernsey counties

The Ohio Rail Development Commission approved grant funding for two rail rehabilitation projects at its Sept. 24 meeting in Columbus. Together, the projects account for nearly $1.6 million in rail infrastructure investment in Richland and Guernsey counties. The funding supports critical improvements to existing rail infrastructure in Ohio. Ashland Railway's Willard Line The commission approved a $744,000 grant for Ashland Railway. The money will help rehabilitate four miles of mainline track along the Willard Line. This work is Phase 2 of a plan with three phases to upgrade 12 miles of track on the line. The railroad will install 7,000 ties, replace tie plates and add ballast. The grant helps the railroad maintain safe and efficient operations on a line that serves various industries across north central Ohio. The total project investment is estimated at nearly $1.3 million. Independence Rail Works in Guernsey County Independence Rail Works, Ltd., a division of The Zemba Companies, was approved for a $190,000 grant. The money will go toward rehabilitating about three miles of track between Derwent and Pleasant City in Guernsey County. The company plans to install ties and distribute more than 1,500 tons of ballast. These improvements will help the company provide rail access to existing customers. They are also intended to attract new business to the area. The total project investment is estimated at $380,000. Matthew Dietrich, executive director of the Ohio Rail Development Commission, said, "Improving existing rail infrastructure across Ohio is key to maintaining safety of railroad operations in the state. These investments represent critical upgrades that will aid in the long term success of companies operating across Ohio. We are happy to be part of this effort." Acting director named The commission also appointed an acting executive director because of Dietrich's upcoming retirement. Megan McClory, the commission's secretary treasurer, will take on the acting role. She will continue serving as secretary treasurer as well.
