Peru’s Permanent Bird Flocks Take Flight at Penitentiary Glen

Community — Ohio

Blackbrook Audubon hosts Dr. Sean Williams on mixed-species bird flocks in Peru, October 20 at Penitentiary Glen in Kirtland. Free, no registration needed.

Birds of a feather may flock together, but in the Amazon, birds of many feathers do too. Blackbrook Audubon invites the public to learn how when Dr. Sean Williams presents “Mixed-species Bird Flocks in Peru” on Tuesday, October 20. The free program begins at 7 p.m. at Lake Metroparks Penitentiary Glen Reservation, 8668 Kirtland-Chardon Road in Kirtland. Registration is not required. A Year in the Peruvian Rainforest Williams is an assistant professor at Cuyahoga Community College. He spent more than a year doing field work in the rainforest of Peru for his PhD dissertation. That research forms the heart of his presentation. According to Williams, the flocks he studied in South America behave very differently from the ones Ohio birders know. “Our Ohioan mixed-species flocks are ephemeral; individuals transiently form, join, or leave flocks at their convenience. By contrast, understory mixed-species flocks in the Amazon are permanent, a unique feature in the animal kingdom,” Williams said. Beyond the science, he will share stories from living in a lowland rainforest. Attendees will hear about the wildlife he encountered there, including monkeys, cats, snakes and Harpy Eagles. Quilt Raffle Supports Conservation Students Blackbrook will sell raffle tickets that evening for a 40" x 64" handmade quilt. Proceeds benefit the chapter’s 2027 Education Scholarship, awarded to a college student studying a conservation major. The winning ticket will be drawn at Blackbrook’s November 17 program. Ticket holders do not need to be present to win. Bring Your Own Mug Coffee and light refreshments will be provided. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own beverage containers. Doing so makes them eligible for the Bring Your Own Mug raffle. That drawing for a $25 gift card will be held at a future program meeting, and the winner need not be present.
