Gates Mills police handle local neighbor concerns and safety hazards GATES MILLS, Ohio — The Gates Mills Police Department recently addressed a variety of community concerns, ranging from intellectual disability advocacy in neighborhood disputes to infrastructure safety regarding gas line ruptures. Key incidents included a resolution regarding mail being taken from private residences, the removal of an unauthorized solicitor, and emergency responses to gas leaks at local institutions. Resolution of Mail Handling Incident at CCDD Supervised Home On April 7, officers were dispatched to a residence on Battles Road following a report of mail being removed from a private mailbox. The complainant observed a neighbor, who resides in a supervised home managed by the Cuyahoga County Department of Developmental Disabilities (CCDD), taking mail and returning it to the group home. Upon investigation, officers spoke with the on-site supervisor who explained that the resident often retrieves the home's mail and inadvertently collects items from adjacent mailboxes. The supervisor promptly returned the mail and pledged to address the behavior through additional oversight. No criminal charges were filed. Police Response to Unauthorized Solicitation and Traffic Concerns On April 8, Gates Mills officers responded to Dorchester Road after receiving reports of a door-to-door solicitor traveling via scooter. The individual, an employee of a pest control company, was located and informed that the village maintains a no-solicitation policy. Additionally, on April 9, police conducted an area search on Mayfield Road near West Hill following a report of a male in a gray Honda allegedly consuming alcohol while driving. Despite a thorough check of the vicinity, the vehicle was not located. Emergency Management of Gas Leaks and Public Safety Public safety units were called to two separate gas-related incidents this week. On April 8, a contractor working in the 1100 block of Chagrin River Road accidentally struck a gas line. Dominion East Ohio was immediately notified and performed the necessary repairs to secure the area. On April 9, both police and fire departments responded to the library science building at Gilmour Academy following reports of a gas odor. First responders determined the source was a boiler, which was shut down and ventilated. No injuries were reported. Assistance for Senior Citizens and 911 Welfare Checks The department continues to prioritize welfare checks, as evidenced by a response on April 7 to a Gates Mills Boulevard address following a 911 hang-up. Responding officers confirmed that the call was a misdial by a senior citizen resident and verified that no emergency assistance was required.
