Authorities also addressed two domestic violence situations resulting in arrests and a thwarted assault at a local restaurant that led to multiple charges for a local resident. High-Dollar Fraud and Financial Scams in Solon Financial crimes dominated the department's recent reports, with two residents falling victim to sophisticated bank-impersonation schemes. On April 10, a 26-year-old man was contacted by individuals claiming to be from his bank's fraud department and the FDIC. Under the guise of protecting his funds from a $15,000 unauthorized transfer, he was instructed to move that exact amount into an account belonging to a stranger in Florida. In a separate, more extensive case on April 12, an 88-year-old resident reported losing $396,000. The victim was contacted by individuals claiming to be from Apple and later the FDIC, who convinced him to make several transfers to a Wells Fargo account over a two-week period to "protect" his accounts. Solon detectives are currently investigating both cases to identify the suspects and attempt fund recovery. Domestic Violence and Strangulation Arrests Police responded to two serious domestic disputes this week. On April 11, officers were called to Park East Drive after a Streetsboro woman reported being struck and choked by the father of her son in a parking lot. Despite the suspect's conflicting version of events, officers observed physical evidence of a struggle on the victim's neck and face, leading to charges of domestic violence and third-degree felony strangulation. A second incident occurred on April 13 at a Liberty Hills apartment on Franklin Drive. A 25-year-old woman, who is pregnant, reported that her fiancé pushed and threatened her during an argument. The suspect was located at a home in Warrensville Heights and arrested; due to the victim's pregnancy, the domestic violence charge was elevated to a fifth-degree felony. Unprovoked Assault and OVI Arrest On April 7, a 43-year-old man reported that a suspect attempted to punch him in the parking lot of a restaurant on Aurora Road. The victim noted the suspect was making "irrational comments" before fleeing the scene in a black sedan. Officers located the vehicle nearby and performed field sobriety tests on the 19-year-old driver. While a breathalyzer showed a 0% blood alcohol concentration, a urine sample was taken for further analysis. The suspect was charged with assault, OVI, and additional traffic violations. Breaking and Entering at Hawthorne Valley Country Club On April 13, a property manager at the Hawthorne Valley Country Club discovered a side door had been pried open. An audible alarm likely deterred the intruder, as no items were reported stolen or damaged inside the facility. Officers recovered a cell phone left on the ground near the door and are working to identify the owner.
