Good Friday morning — May 8, 2026 — and welcome to a spring update from around Northeast Ohio. If you’re heading out this weekend, expect typical late-spring weather and plenty of community events to choose from. On community and civic news: Summit County will roll out a new fraud protection feature for SNAP EBT cards — including Summer EBT/Sun Bucks — on May 13, automatically placing cards in a “Block High-Risk Transactions” status to help prevent theft. Nearby, Macedonia is hosting the Red, White & Roots Market Fundraiser on Saturday, May 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; the farmers market–style event is raising money to help the McEvoy family with their path to permanent residency and will showcase local goods and vendors. Public safety units stayed busy this week. Northfield Village police reported a mix of shoplifting calls, a missing-person recovery, and multiple OVI arrests in their April 29–May 6 blotter. Sagamore Hills officers handled fraud schemes, assisted other agencies and dealt with psychiatric situations and at least one vehicle-theft recovery. Over in Ravenna, officers responded to a child endangerment case involving an abandoned juvenile on N. Freedom Street, several school disruptions and property damage at Brown Middle School and Ravenna High School, and a string of OVI arrests along E. Main Street. On local sports, Nordonia had a week of big moments: the girls flag football team has been named one of 11 division champions and advances to the Browns Girls High School Flag Football Championship Tournament — a real milestone for the program. The varsity baseball and softball teams hit a tougher patch, with the baseball squad dropping a pitcher’s duel 4–1 to Wadsworth on May 6 and the softball team also falling to North Royalton in a hard-fought game. Health and lifestyle coverage this week leaned toward practical wellness: our Brews & Blends column talked about functional drinks that go beyond caffeine, highlighting nitric oxide’s role in circulation and stamina; another piece for Mental Health Awareness Month explored the often-overlooked hormonal links to mood and well-being (with a related look at MSK Shockwave Therapy in Solon). We also ran seasonal pieces — family tips for Great Lakes trips and strategies for maintaining weight loss — to help readers plan safe, budget-friendly summers. There are no new bulletin board notices today. Stay tuned to NEOhio.news for updates through the day, and have a safe, informed weekend.
