Gates Mills Police Blotter: Traffic Citations, Identity Theft, and Fraudulent Vehicle Purchases

Public Safety — Gates Mills

Gates Mills police handle reports of identity theft, attempted vehicle fraud, and traffic violations.

GATES MILLS, Ohio – The Gates Mills police reports for early May 2026 highlight a series of investigations into financial crimes, including identity theft and a sophisticated attempt to purchase a vehicle out of state using a local resident's credentials. Officers also addressed traffic safety concerns and various neighborhood welfare checks throughout the village. Suspension and Speeding Citations on Brigham Road On May 3, a Gates Mills police officer conducted a traffic stop on Brigham Road after observing a vehicle traveling 50 mph in a 35 mph zone. The driver, a 49-year-old male from Bedford, was found to be operating the vehicle under a license suspension. Police cited the individual for both the speeding violation and the driving under suspension (DUS) charge. To avoid a tow, the vehicle was released on-site to a valid, licensed driver. Identity Theft and Attempted Fraudulent Purchases Financial crimes were a significant focus this week. On May 5, a resident of Woodstock Road reported a case of identity theft involving a fraudulent account opened in their name. Later, on May 7, an Old Mill Road resident was contacted by a Ford dealership located in Washington State. A sales associate there reported receiving an email from an unknown individual attempting to purchase a vehicle using the resident’s husband’s name. The suspect requested the vehicle be shipped to an out-of-state address. The dealership flagged the transaction as suspicious and notified the family before any sale was completed. Gates Mills police are investigating the attempted fraud. Community Welfare Checks and Noise Complaints Police responded to several calls to ensure resident safety and neighborhood peace: Carpenter Road: On May 4, police investigated reports of a male walking near the cell tower. Officers identified the individual as an AT&T worker performing routine maintenance. Gates Road: On May 7, an open-line 911 call triggered a response to a local residence. Officers determined the call was the result of technical phone line trouble rather than an emergency. Sherman Road: Residents reported hearing shots fired on May 8 near County Line Road. An arriving officer discovered the noise was caused by a neighbor discharging fireworks. The individual was advised of the local ordinances and agreed to stop.
