The Cleveland Cavaliers are intensifying their search for a new head coach after parting ways with J.B. Bickerstaff following their elimination in the second round of the 2024 NBA playoffs by the Boston Celtics.
The Cavaliers have expanded their list of potential candidates, adding New York Knicks associate head coach Johnnie Bryant and Miami Heat’s top assistant coach Chris Quinn to their interview roster. The team has already secured permission to interview both candidates, as confirmed by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
New Candidates in the Mix
Johnnie Bryant has been with the New York Knicks since 2020 after serving as an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz from 2014 to 2020. Bryant’s reputation for player development makes him a strong contender for the Cavaliers’ head coach position.
Chris Quinn, another newly considered candidate, has been a vital part of the Miami Heat’s coaching staff since 2014. Quinn, who played for the Cavaliers briefly in 2013, brings a wealth of experience from his playing days and coaching tenure, making him a valuable asset in the Cavs’ selection process.
Existing Candidates
The Cavaliers have also been granted permission to interview Golden State Warriors assistant coach Kenny Atkinson and New Orleans Pelicans assistant coach James Borrego. Atkinson is the only candidate with head coaching experience, having led the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 to 2020.
Borrego, known for his strategic acumen, has worked under Gregg Popovich with the San Antonio Spurs and held various coaching roles with the New Orleans Hornets, Orlando Magic, and Charlotte Hornets. His extensive experience in different coaching capacities adds depth to the Cavaliers’ pool of candidates.
Next Steps
The Cavaliers are expected to move swiftly in their interview process, aiming to appoint a new head coach who can build on the team’s recent progress and propel them further in the playoffs. The inclusion of candidates with diverse backgrounds and coaching philosophies reflects the Cavaliers’ commitment to finding the best fit for their team dynamics and long-term goals.
