A recent analysis reveals alarming trends in Ohio’s seat belt compliance, placing the Buckeye State among the worst in the nation for driver safety practices.
According to a new study conducted by personal injury law firm Simmrin Law, Ohio ranks tenth lowest in the United States for seat belt usage, with an average rate of 81.63% – significantly below the national average of 90.38%.
The research, which examined National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data from 2016 to 2023, shows Ohio’s compliance rates have been inconsistent over the years, reaching their lowest point of 78.50% in 2023, down from highs of 83.70% in both 2019 and 2020.
“The study highlights that Ohio reported the tenth lowest seat belt compliance rates in the U.S.,” noted a Simmrin Law spokesperson. “Failing to wear a seat belt significantly increases the risk of fatal injuries in traffic accidents. These low compliance rates are particularly concerning given that seat belts are proven to reduce the risk of death by 45% for front-seat passenger car occupants.”
With over 8 million licensed drivers in Ohio, the declining usage rates represent a significant public safety concern. Safety advocates are calling for increased awareness campaigns and potentially stronger enforcement measures.
New Jersey holds the dubious distinction of ranking worst in the nation with only 73.30% of drivers buckling up, followed by Michigan at 78.57% and South Dakota at 79.68%.
Ohio’s ranking places it just behind Wyoming (81.60%) and ahead of states with better compliance rates, including Indiana and Kentucky.
The researchers suggest that “state leaders and policymakers can increase public awareness about the importance of seat belt use, and consider strengthening seat belt laws to primary enforcement status in states where they remain secondary violations.”
Current Ohio law classifies seat belt violations as secondary offenses for adults, meaning drivers cannot be pulled over solely for not wearing seat belts, though they can receive citations if stopped for other infractions.
