Storm Victims Eligible for Property Tax Breaks

Summit County Offers Relief for Damaged Homes

Property owners in Summit County who suffered damage from the recent storm can now apply for real estate tax relief, according to an announcement from Fiscal Officer Kristen M. Scalise CPA, CFE.

Eligible residents can file an Application for Valuation Deduction for Destroyed or Damaged Property (Form DTE 26) to receive a 75% reduction in the value of damaged portions of their property.

“Any deduction from value will affect tax bills mailed in January 2026,” Scalise said, emphasizing the importance of filing promptly despite the December 31, 2025 deadline.

For example, a property appraised at $100,000 with $10,000 in storm damage would receive a $7,500 reduction, resulting in a new appraisal value of $92,500 for tax year 2025.

Residents can download Form DTE 26 from http://fiscaloffice.summitoh.net by clicking the “Damaged Property” link under the Real Estate and Appraisal column. Completed applications should be mailed to the Summit County Fiscal Office at 175 S. Main Street, Room 304, Akron, OH 44308. Those without internet access can request a form by calling (330) 643-2704.

The Appraisal Department will inspect properties to verify damage amounts, though damage to trees, landscaping, fencing, and personal items is excluded for residential properties.
