As graduation ceremonies and wedding bells fill the Northeast Ohio air this spring, many residents find themselves pondering the same question: how much should they give?
“Gift-giving expectations have certainly evolved over the years,” says Jennifer M., an event planner and etiquette consultant. “The amount really depends on your relationship with the graduate or couple and, of course, your own financial situation.”
For high school graduations, monetary gifts typically range from $20-75 for friends of the family, while closer relatives often give between $50-100. Immediate family members frequently provide more substantial gifts, sometimes $100-500, especially if helping with college expenses.
“Many people don’t realize that giving money isn’t the only option,” Jennifer explains. “For high school graduates, consider gift cards to retailers where they can purchase dorm essentials or books for college. These practical gifts are always appreciated.”
Wedding gift amounts tend to be higher, with most guests giving between $75-150 per person attending. Close friends and family members often contribute $150-300 or more.
“The old rule of thumb was to cover your plate cost, but that’s become outdated since most guests don’t know what the couple paid per person,” notes Jennifer. “Instead, give what feels comfortable for your budget and your relationship with the couple.”
Local resident Marina C. recently navigated this question for her niece’s graduation. “I ended up giving $100 since she’s family and heading to college in the fall. For my neighbor’s son, I gave $30 and a small care package of college essentials.”
Financial advisors suggest planning ahead for these seasonal expenses. “We see many clients who forget to budget for spring and summer celebrations,” says Robert M., financial advisor. “Setting aside a small fund specifically for gifts can prevent last-minute budget strain.”
Whatever the amount, including a heartfelt card with your gift adds a personal touch that recipients remember long after the money is spent.
