The Aurora Police Department responded to a variety of calls last week, ranging from mental health concerns to OVI arrests and domestic incidents. Officers maintained a visible presence throughout the community during the transition into warmer weather.
MENTAL HEALTH
Welfare Check Leads to Assistance for Elderly Resident – May 1
Officers conducted a welfare check at a Fox Run Trail residence after receiving a request from dispatch. Upon arrival at approximately 8:45 a.m., officers observed an elderly female through a window who appeared to be in distress but was not answering the door.
“I can see her through the window not coming to the door. I believe she is very ill and needs evaluation,” reported one officer on scene.
After gaining entry, officers discovered the woman needed medical attention and called for EMS support. Officers remained on scene until medical personnel arrived to provide care.
DUI/OVI
Driver Arrested After Vehicle Found in Ditch – May 2
At approximately 8:49 p.m., officers responded to Pioneer Trail near Garfield after reports of a black BMW halfway in a ditch with flashers activated. Upon arrival, officers found a female driver who appeared impaired attempting to get assistance.
Officers conducted field sobriety tests before placing the driver under arrest for OVI. The driver, identified as Leslie Cohen, was taken into custody and charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Officers arranged for Bainbridge Towing to remove the vehicle from the scene.
FRAUD/IDENTITY THEFT
Two Identity Theft Reports Filed – April 30 & May 4
Officers took two separate reports of identity theft within a one-week period. On April 30 at 8:49 a.m., a female victim reported to the police station regarding someone from out of state using her Social Security number.
In a similar incident on May 4 at 7:06 a.m., another female arrived at the station to file a report for identity theft. Both cases have been forwarded to detectives for further investigation.
DOMESTIC INCIDENTS
Domestic Situation Resolved Peacefully – May 5
Officers responded to a residence on Cambridge Drive at 2:19 p.m. following reports of a suicidal male threatening harm to himself and family members. The individual had reportedly resigned from his job at a local store earlier in the day.
Officers arrived and made contact with the individual, who agreed to speak with officers willingly. “He did not make any threats and is okay,” confirmed an officer on scene. “He’s at home and will speak with officers willingly when they arrive.”
After arriving, officers successfully de-escalated the situation. No arrests were made as no actual threats had occurred, according to responding officers.
BURGLARY
Residential Break-In Reported – May 6
At 3:47 p.m., officers responded to Parker Road after a male resident reported a break-in at his home. The victim met officers in the lobby to file the report. Details of items taken were not disclosed in the initial report, and the investigation remains ongoing.
TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT
Multiple Traffic Stops Conducted Throughout Week
A significant traffic stop occurred on May 6 at 11:39 a.m. on Chillicothe Road when officers initiated a stop for a driver traveling through the town. The stop was part of a coordinated effort with other jurisdictions regarding an outstanding warrant.
