Man Accused of Shooting at Akron Police Officers Near University of Akron

Officer And Woman Injured in Sunday Night Incident on Sherman Street

AKRON — A 33-year-old man is in custody after shooting at Akron police officers near the University of Akron late Sunday night, prompting officers to return fire.

The incident began around 11:23 p.m. when officers responded to a welfare call for a teenager in the 400 block of Grant Street. While on scene, officers heard gunshots nearby and subsequently responded to 440 Sherman Street to investigate.

As officers approached the residence, they encountered a man armed with a firearm running out of an apartment. The man shot at police and officers returned fire, according to Deputy Chief Mike Miller.

The 33-year-old suspect tried to run away, but was captured a few blocks away and taken into custody without incident.

A firearm and over a dozen shell casings were recovered from the scene, according to police.

When police later entered into the Sherman Street apartment, they found a 27-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her leg. She was taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Akron FOP President Brian Lucey tells News 5 that one officer also sustained some minor injuries from the incident.

“This was a dangerous interaction that had the potential to become much worse if not for the actions of our officers”, according to a statement from Akron police.

The two officers involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave per departmental procedure. The Office of Professional Standards and Accountability is investigating.

The suspect’s name has not been released. No charges have been announced at this time.
