Boy Pronounced Dead at Akron Children's Hospital Following Accident Near Parade Route End

This story has been updated with victim identification. The Summit County Medical Examiner has identified the 13-year-old boy killed during the Memorial Day parade in Green as Matthew Schultz, of North Canton.

GREEN, Ohio – A 13-year-old boy died Monday after falling from a parade trailer and being struck by dual tires during the City of Green’s Memorial Day parade.

At approximately 11:23 a.m., the juvenile participating in the parade fell from a trailer being used as part of a parade float, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. Following the fall, the teen was struck by the dual tires of the trailer.

Green Fire EMS personnel, who were on-site providing support for the event, immediately responded to the scene. Matthew was transported to Akron Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries at 12:04 p.m. Monday, according to the medical examiner.

The parade began at 10 a.m. at Green High School, following a path along Boettler Road, Massillon Road, Steese Road and Bulldog Boulevard.

Matthew attended North Canton City Schools.

The parade was ended early following the tragic accident.

The incident remains under investigation by the Summit County Sheriff’s Office. No additional details are available at this time.
