Matthew Schultz, a 13-year-old North Canton City Schools student, died Monday after falling from a parade trailer and being run over during the Memorial Day parade in Green, Ohio. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. near the end of the parade route when Schultz fell from the front of a trailer being pulled by a pickup truck and was struck by the trailer’s wheels.

Schultz was transported to Akron Children’s Hospital where he died from his injuries at 12:04 p.m. The trailer was traveling at less than 5 mph and had several children riding on it. Fire personnel who were already on site for the parade immediately responded.

Two prayer vigils are scheduled for Friday in North Canton in memory of Schultz. Calling hours are Monday, June 2, at Rossi Family Funeral Home from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in Canton, with funeral services Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Christ the Servant Parish.

Schultz was described as a kind and caring boy who loved Star Wars and fruit snacks. The family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming community support.

Green Mayor Rocco Yeargin said counselors are available at Green High School through Wednesday for community members who witnessed the accident. North Canton City Schools activated crisis management teams and counseling services.

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, which they called a “tragic accident.”
