A structure fire broke out early Tuesday morning at the Pucker Up Candy Shop on Lake Road East in Geneva-on-the-Lake, prompting a multi-department response and forcing the popular business to close indefinitely.

The Geneva-on-the-Lake Fire Department responded to reports of smoke inside the building at 4:18 a.m. after a guest staying in an Airbnb unit above the shop reported the incident. Police arrived shortly after and confirmed visible smoke coming from the two-story structure, with all doors leading to the rear storage area warm to the touch.

Fire crews made forcible entry to the rear of the building and located an active fire in the back area. The Geneva Fire Department assisted with the response, deploying a 1¾-inch hose line to begin fire suppression efforts. Additional resources were called in through the MABAS Box 2711 mutual aid system, bringing crews from Saybrook Fire Department, Madison Fire District and Northwest Ambulance District.

The fire was brought under control by 5:12 a.m. All occupants of the Airbnb unit evacuated safely, and the fire did not extend to the second floor living area or main candy shop storefront. One patient was transported to UH Geneva Medical Center for evaluation.

Following the fire, the candy shop announced on social media that it will remain closed until further notice while cleanup and replacement of inventory takes place. The business had been approaching its 10-year anniversary.

“Clean up and replacing everything will take some time. Thank you for all of your support and loyalty. Hopefully we will be back and better than ever to celebrate our 10 year anniversary,” the shop posted on Facebook.

The business also shared appreciation for the emergency response, thanking the Geneva-on-the-Lake Police Department, fire departments, EMS and other agencies for their quick response and professionalism in controlling the blaze.
