Local teams claim title share and multiple top finishes at Boulder Creek

Northeast Ohio golfers had a strong showing at Saturday’s Ohio.Golf 2-Player Better Ball tournament, with a local team sharing the championship and several others finishing in the top 10 at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Streetsboro.

Mike Simpson of Uniontown and Jimmy Wild of Sagamore Hills tied for first place at 4-under par 68, earning $383.33 each. The duo also collected a $210 skin with their birdie on the eighth hole.

Simpson and Wild held the lead after surging to 5-under par through 10 holes but stumbled over the final eight, including a costly bogey at 18 that dropped them into a three-way tie.

Nicolas Wendel-Pinyon and Alex Stoneman, both of Northfield, finished fourth at 1-under par 69 to earn $130 each, also capturing a $210 skin with their birdie on 13.

Several other area teams cracked the top 10. Matthew Frey of Broadview Heights and Ryan Stefanski of Cleveland tied for fifth at 70, while Colin Burns and Ryan Wirtz of Lakewood also shot 70 for a share of fifth place.

Allen Freeman of Brecksville and David Stover of Pepper Pike finished seventh at 71 and earned a $210 skin with their birdie on the second hole.

The Akron-area Mullen brothers, Matthew and Tom, tied for eighth at 76, while Jason Darrah of Clinton and Tyler Wierzbicki of Uniontown also finished T8 at 76.

Michael Johnson of Parma Heights and Hayley Johnson of Medina rounded out the local contingent in 14th place at 87.

The hot and windy conditions challenged all 16 teams competing in the better ball format.
