Solon Police Make Multiple Arrests as Scammers Target Residents for Over $617,000

Domestic Violence, Drug Charges and Major Fraud Cases Reported

June 23 – Domestic Violence Incident Results in Arrest

Officers responded to the Cannon Road block at 9:32 p.m. for a domestic dispute between a boyfriend and girlfriend, both 40 years old and living at the residence. Both parties told officers different versions of what happened and each alleged the other was violent toward them. Officers observed signs of a physical conflict inside the home and determined the man was the primary physical aggressor. Melvin Treadway, 40, of Solon, was arrested and taken to Solon Jail where he was charged with domestic violence. The woman was taken to an area hospital for non-life threatening injuries sustained during the argument.

June 24 – Vehicle Flees After Willoughby Theft

At 2:32 p.m., dispatch advised patrol officers that a vehicle involved in a theft incident in Willoughby was entering the city on US 422 eastbound. A witness was following a silver Honda Civic whose occupants were reportedly seen stealing iPhones from a Willoughby store. An officer spotted the vehicle and followed behind it. The car drove through a red traffic signal on Solon Road westbound at Bainbridge, prompting the officer to attempt a traffic stop. The vehicle accelerated away and pursuit was quickly terminated as the officer lost sight of the car when it entered a construction zone. The incident remains under investigation.

June 24 – Second Arrest at Same Cannon Road Address

At 6:42 p.m., officers returned to the same Cannon Road house from the previous day’s domestic violence incident for another disturbance report. Family members of suspect Melvin Treadway came to check on dogs and the condition of the house. The visitors were Treadway’s aunt, 61, of Mayfield Village, and his mother, 63, of Mayfield Village. The two women attempted to talk to resident Kaylyn Downie, 40, of Solon, and an argument ensued. Downie reportedly pushed the aunt, who sustained visible scratches from the aggression. Officers arrested Downie for assault. She was taken to Solon Jail and charged with assault.

June 25 – Stolen Rental Car Detected by License Plate Reader

At 8:33 a.m., an automated license plate reader system alerted officers to a 2023 black Kia Forte that had entered Solon city limits. The vehicle was entered in the system as stolen. An officer found the vehicle parked unoccupied at Towne Place Suites on Enterprise Parkway. Paperwork inside the vehicle contained a name visible to the officer standing outside the car. The officer went into the hotel and asked if someone named Wagner Jr. was present. An employee confirmed this and helped locate him. The suspect told the officer he had driven the vehicle and said it was his girlfriend’s car. The car was actually owned by Enterprise Rent-a-Car and the renter had failed to return it. Kevin Wagner Jr., 37, of Maple Heights, was arrested and taken to Solon Jail. He was charged with receiving stolen property and driving under suspension. The vehicle was returned to the car company.

June 25 – Driver Found Sleeping on Freeway With Alcohol

At 5:05 p.m., officers were dispatched to check the welfare of a driver stopped on US 422 eastbound near SOM Center Road. The driver was reportedly slumped over the wheel. An officer found the black Ford Fusion on the shoulder with a sleeping man in the driver’s seat. The officer woke the driver and observed an open can of a Mai Tai cocktail in the driver’s door along with other empty alcoholic beverage cans. The man denied drinking and said he had a flat tire, which was true. The driver performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was arrested. The officer found a vial of suspected cocaine and smoking pipes in the driver’s possession. The suspect was taken to Solon Jail where he completed a breath test, registering .049% blood alcohol content. A urine sample was also collected for follow-up testing. Adam C. Brooks, 42, of Lyndhurst, was charged with OVI, improper display of license plates, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Additional charges are pending identification of the suspected cocaine after lab analysis and urine test results. The vehicle was towed.

June 25 – Elderly Couple Loses $13,000 in Tech Support Scam

At 1:28 p.m., a Solon resident came to the police station to report theft. The man, 82, and his wife, 81, both of Solon, lost $13,000 in a computer-related fraud. The woman noticed a pop-up on her computer alerting her to call Microsoft because her computer was corrupted. She called the phone number provided in the message and was eventually connected with someone supposedly working with a bank’s fraud department. The caller advised the woman that she and her husband were involved in a federal crime and would be arrested by the FBI if they didn’t pay $13,000 to clean up the situation. The couple withdrew $13,000 cash from their bank account, drove to a cryptocurrency ATM in Warrensville Heights, deposited the money into a crypto account, and sent the scammer all identifying information for the account. They suspected it was a scam when the suspects called back later asking for more money, which they did not send. Detectives are investigating.

June 26 – Solon Man Loses Over $600,000 in Bitcoin Theft

At 6:01 p.m., a Solon man, 59, reported to police that he was the victim of theft of his entire cryptocurrency Bitcoin wallet value. He stated he believed someone obtained the seed phrase or password for his account. He was contacted by phone and email by a scammer who identified as a broker for Gemini, a supposed online Bitcoin broker. The scammer tried to coax the password from the victim, but the victim said he did not give the suspect the information. He believed someone gained unauthorized access to his computer and figured it out. He is currently at a loss for over $600,000 in Bitcoin value. Detectives and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation are investigating.

June 27 – Credit Card Fraud Reported

At 11:10 a.m., a Solon woman, 73, reported $863.37 in fraudulent charges on her credit card. She does not know how perpetrators obtained her card information because she still had her card in her possession. The bank will not hold her responsible for the charges but requested a police report to document the fraud.

June 27 – WhatsApp Gaming Employment Scam

At 4:02 p.m., a Solon man, 19, reported he was contacted by a female on WhatsApp who said she was with a staffing agency called Voldex. Voldex is a video gaming company. She supplied him with a website, which was apparently cloned from the real Voldex website. He was told to add money to his work account so he could play video games and be paid for it. He added a total of $4,390 and now cannot access the money. The Detective Bureau is investigating.
