Gas Station Shuffle: Circle K Becomes MAPCO in Northeast Ohio

Federal Trade Commission mandates sale of 35 stores across three states to preserve competition

The new MAPCO sign at gas stations across Northeast Ohio represents a significant convenience store shuffle triggered by federal antitrust requirements.

Business

Majors Management LLC acquired 35 retail fuel and convenience store locations across Indiana, Ohio and Pennsylvania from Circle K owner Alimentation Couche-Tard on July 1. The Federal Trade Commission approved Couche-Tard’s acquisition of GetGo Cafe + Market on Thursday, and the $1.57 billion deal closed Sunday. To resolve antitrust concerns, the FTC required the divestiture of 35 gas stations to preserve competition in the affected markets.

The rebranding affects 12 Circle K locations in Summit County, two in Portage County and two in Medina County. Majors Management said it will rebrand the stores to MAPCO over the coming months.

MAPCO shoppers can look forward to grab-and-go meals, fresh coffee, quality fuel and exclusive savings through MY Reward$— a program that lets customers earn points on every purchase and redeem them for discounts at the pump or in-store.

The company said it plans to retain existing employees “wherever possible” and invest in upgrading these facilities.

MAPCO was previously a subsidiary of Santiago, Chile-based Compania de Petroleos de Chile. In 2023, Majors Management and Couche-Tard split up MAPCO Express stores, with Majors Management acquiring 192 MAPCO-branded convenience stores in Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Arkansas and Kentucky.

This marks MAPCO’s first expansion into Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania markets.
