Two Painesville Harvey High Graduates Die in Cleveland Highway Crash

Community mourns loss of soccer player and wrestler in weekend accident

Two recent Harvey High School graduates died and a third student was critically injured in a rollover car accident early Sunday morning at the I-77 North and I-90 East split in Cleveland.

Kevin DeJesus and Aidan Moreno, both 18 years old and from Painesville, died from injuries sustained in the crash, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner. DeJesus was a member of the Harvey soccer team, while Moreno competed as a wrestler for the school. A third person, a 17-year-old boy, was also hurt and taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Cleveland police said officers responded around 1:15 a.m. to the northbound lanes of I-77 for a single-car crash. Officers arrived to find the car crashed off an embankment at the I-90 East/East 9th Street/Ontario Street split.

According to police, the car was traveling northbound on I-71 at a high rate of speed and passing cars on the right. When the car approached the curve leading to I-90 East, police said the driver veered off the road and rolled several times.

Police have not shared an update on the third victim’s condition.

The tragedy has deeply impacted the Painesville community. Painesville City Local Schools is partnering with the Lake County Trauma Response team to provide counseling services at Harvey High School on Tuesday, July 22 and Wednesday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Residents needing support beyond those dates can contact the Lake County Crisis Hotline at 440-953-8255.

A memorial service for both students will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Painesville on Thursday, July 24 from 4-7 p.m., followed by a mass at 7 p.m.
