A Sagamore Hills resident has launched a new podcast for Cleveland State University that’s gaining popularity among students, faculty and alumni.
Matt Lupica, a Nordonia High School graduate who works as a senior content writer at CSU, created Viking Voices as a communication tool to reach university audiences. The podcast aligns with Cleveland State’s new strategic plan launched earlier this year.
Lupica has experience creating podcasts during challenging times. In 2020, he launched a podcast for Kent State University’s Division of Student Affairs during the COVID-19 pandemic to help connect people during social distancing.
The veteran broadcaster brings more than 20 years of experience to the project. He started his career at age 15 as a color commentator for high school sports on local access television. After graduating from Kent State University with a communications degree, he authored “The Baseball Stadium Insider” in 2015, which featured all 30 Major League ballparks and interviews with more than 300 players, broadcasters and managers. He also served as an on-air host for WKSU-FM 89.7, Kent’s NPR affiliate.
Viking Voices features guests sharing their Cleveland State experiences while highlighting university values including community collaboration and serving students. Men’s basketball coach Rob Summers appeared as the first guest in June, followed by graduate student Tyisha Blade in July.
Starting in September, Lupica plans to release two episodes monthly. The podcast is available through CSU’s official channels and on Spotify.
Lupica said broadcasting has been his passion since childhood, when he would call play-by-play for video games and write recap stories afterward. He hinted that well-known guests will appear in future episodes.
