Vehicular Assault Benjamin Charles Wells, 47, of Novelty was arrested April 20 on charges of aggravated vehicular assault and hit-skip after allegedly striking a 74-year-old bicyclist on Miles Road and fleeing the scene.

The Willoughby Hills man was riding his bicycle eastbound on Miles Road near Miles Farmer’s Market on April 18 at 4:59 pm when a small black passenger car struck him while passing. The driver left the scene, but investigating officers used traffic cameras to identify the vehicle as a black Acura Integra. Wells was found at his Novelty residence on April 20 where the damaged car was parked outside with damage consistent with the crash. The bicyclist suffered serious injuries and was believed to still be hospitalized as of Monday afternoon. Wells faces charges of aggravated vehicular assault and hit-skip. The vehicle was seized as evidence, and some aspects of the case remain under investigation.

OVI/Fleeing and Eluding Rex Lanier, 60, of Burlington, North Carolina, was arrested after a multi-jurisdiction chase that ended in Hudson early April 19.

An officer spotted Lanier’s white Jeep traveling south on SOM Center Road near Bainbridge Road at 12:30 am, driving 48 mph in a 35 mph zone. When the officer attempted a traffic stop for speeding, the Jeep veered out of its lane, pulled over driving over a curb, then sped away as the officer exited his patrol car. Lanier drove through grass on SOM Center Road near Inwood during the pursuit. The chase continued with lights and siren into Twinsburg, where a Twinsburg officer deployed a stop stick on State Route 91 near Ravenna Road. Lanier drove over the device with one tire, causing it to deflate and fall apart as he continued driving. The vehicle finally stopped on State Route 91 in Hudson where Lanier surrendered. He was taken to Solon Jail where he performed poorly on field sobriety tests and refused a breath test, resulting in license suspension. An open bottle of vodka was found in the car. Lanier faces charges including fleeing and eluding, possessing criminal tools, OVI, no driver’s license, speeding, driving in marked lanes, and open container. The vehicle was towed and impounded as a criminal tool.

Domestic Violence Bomani Ngozi, 30, of Solon was arrested April 14 following a domestic dispute on North Roundhead Drive. Officers responded at 8:25 pm to reports that Ngozi had threatened his 59-year-old father during an outburst before leaving the home. Ngozi had cut his hand while making food in the kitchen. Officers found him driving a black Honda sedan in the neighborhood and stopped the car as it pulled back into the driveway. After determining he needed medical treatment, Ngozi was taken to an area hospital, then arrested and charged with domestic violence involving threats.

Fraud Investigation A 43-year-old Solon man reported losing $4,900 in a horse trailer scam on April 18. The victim contacted “William’s Horse Trailer Source” in McCook, Nebraska through a Facebook group and paid $4,900 for downpayment and delivery. Before delivery, the seller requested an additional $1,000 for registration fees. When the victim became suspicious and requested a refund instead of paying the extra money, the company blocked his phone number and never delivered the trailer. The company reposted the same trailer for sale in another Facebook group. Police believe the company is not legitimate.
