A 16-year-old male was arrested Friday evening after an armed robbery at a local grocery store led to a foot chase and K-9 apprehension in Akron.
The incident began around 8:25 p.m. on August 16 when Akron Police requested assistance from the Summit County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Unit. The juvenile suspect had robbed a grocery store at gunpoint and fled eastbound toward Tallmadge Avenue and Glenwood Avenue.
A sheriff’s deputy deployed his K-9 to track the suspect, leading officers to a wooded area near railroad tracks. When the suspect emerged from the woods and began running, he ignored verbal commands to stop. The deputy then released the K-9 to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
The police dog located and subdued the juvenile, who sustained a bite wound to his left forearm during the apprehension. Officers discovered a firearm in the suspect’s waistband during a search.
Akron Fire Department medics treated the suspect at the scene before transporting him to Akron Children’s Hospital for evaluation. He was subsequently arrested and charged with Aggravated Robbery, a first-degree felony, and taken to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center.
