Roof Collapses After Firefighters Exit Burning Sagamore Hills Home

Macedonia Fire Department battles hour-long blaze on North Gannett Road

SAGAMORE HILLS — The Macedonia Fire Department responded to a house fire at North Gannett Road early Wednesday morning that resulted in a dramatic roof collapse as crews worked inside the structure.

The fire was dispatched at 1:58 a.m., with the first fire unit arriving on the scene at 2:05 a.m. Sagamore Police arrived on scene at 2:03 a.m. and reported the house was in flames.

The Macedonia Dispatch Center received a call from a neighbor, who reported that the neighbor’s house was on fire and he could see fire. When dispatch asked the caller if he knew if the neighbors were home or if he could see anyone standing outside the house, he answered that he did not see anyone outside, nor did he know if the neighbors were home.

At 2:10 a.m. while two crew were inside the home, one performed a search of the home for possible residents, and the other advancing a hose line into the home to start extinguishing the fire. The Officer in Charge noticed that the roof was beginning to collapse and called for crews to exit the home. Shortly after firefighters exited the home, the roof collapsed into the house.

Crews continued to flow water on the fire from the outside of the structure until the fire was brought under control at approximately 3:04 a.m. While containment was achieved quickly, firefighters remained on scene this morning to address lingering hot spots.

It does not appear that the homeowner was home at the time of the fire because there were no cars in the driveway. No injuries are being reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
