The Ohio Department of Transportation District 4 continues its aggressive construction schedule across Northeast Ohio, with 213 active projects valued at $1.5 billion affecting travel throughout Ashtabula, Mahoning, Portage, Stark, Summit and Trumbull counties.
Transportation
Summit County – The Akron Beltway Improvement Project nears completion with final asphalt and striping work remaining on I-76/I-77 through late July. The $161 million project includes pavement replacements and additional lanes on I-77 between Waterloo Road and Lovers Lane. State Route 8 resurfacing from just south of Tallmadge Avenue to Graham Road in Akron and Cuyahoga Falls continues, with completion expected by October 1. The $7.4 million project includes repairs to 13 bridges along the route.
The $157.7 million replacement of the State Route 8 hi-level bridge over the Cuyahoga River valley continues with crews building the bridge starting on the north side and eventually pushing it across the valley to the south side. ODOT hopes to have the first bridge open by summer 2025.
Stark County – Crews are working on a culvert replacement project on State Route 153 just east of Meese Road in Louisville, with completion scheduled for early next week. A $54.9 million pavement replacement and minor widening project on U.S. Route 20 in Perry Township that began February 1 continues, with work expected to be completed by October 1.
Mahoning County –Â Crews continue work on the State Route 170 pavement project in New Middletown, featuring pavement replacement and drainage installation between East Calla and Sycamore Drive. The project is expected to be completed by late fall. Mahoning County crews are finishing up a culvert replacement on State Route 14, with completion expected by the end of this week.
Trumbull County –Â The ongoing State Route 46 and 82 Diverging Diamond Interchange project in Howland Township continues major construction, with crews focused on building the diverging diamond structure. The project is expected to be completed in summer 2026.
Portage County –Â A second phase of the I-77 widening between Everett Road and Ghent Road that began June 1 continues, with the $56.7 million project including bridge reconstruction, drainage improvements, lighting upgrades, and modifications to the I-77 and Ghent Road interchange. Construction is expected to conclude by September 1, 2027.
Ashtabula County – Culvert maintenance work continues on various routes throughout the county as part of ODOT’s multi-county maintenance program.
ODOT officials announced $80 million in combined investments for Mahoning and Trumbull counties during the 2025 construction season, with over 90 percent of ODOT spending focused on preserving existing infrastructure.
Motorists are reminded to drive cautiously through construction zones. Last year, there were 4,000 crashes in work zones around Ohio, and 22,000 in the last five years.
