Twinsburg School Board Approves Personnel Changes, Hears From New Municipal Judge

New Judge Offers Educational Outreach to Students

The Twinsburg Board of Education met Wednesday at the Government Center, with President Rhonda Crawford presiding over a packed agenda of personnel decisions and community updates.

Municipal Court Judge Introduces Educational Program

Cynthia Curtin, newly appointed judge at the Stowe Municipal Court, addressed the board to introduce herself and propose an educational initiative for middle and high school students. Curtin, who was appointed by Governor DeWine after Memorial Day, brings 35 years of litigation experience to the bench.

The judge offered to speak to classes about the life consequences of criminal convictions, including court costs, license suspensions, and enhanceable offenses. She emphasized that many young people don’t understand these “tagalong consequences” that follow convictions.

“I think we need more education for our young people about the life consequences when you commit a crime and you have a conviction,” Curtin said. She noted that three other school districts have already accepted her offer for free presentations.

Athletics and Activities Updates

President Crawford highlighted the strong start to the fall season, with the football team achieving a 2-0 record for the first time in years. Friday’s matchup against Aurora has been nominated as the Fox 8 game of the week.

Dylan Fanton, who threw for 285 yards and four touchdowns, was named sports ontap player of the week. Soccer player Kayla Sarella earned Jersey Mike’s player of the week after scoring three goals.

The district announced several upcoming events, including senior sunrise at Tiger Stadium Friday morning to mark the start of the seniors’ final year. The Class of 2026 launched the “$26 for the 26” campaign to fund After Prom activities.

Personnel Actions

The board approved multiple personnel recommendations, including the hiring of Samuel Bergdorf as a business teacher at the high school on a one-year limited contract. The board also approved numerous mentor stipends and supplemental contracts for the Washington DC trip chaperones.

Board member Lea Travis abstained from voting on her husband’s supplemental contract for chaperoning the Washington DC trip, maintaining her practice of recusing herself when his employment comes before the board.

Financial and Administrative Business

The board approved July financial reports and expenditures, along with permanent appropriations for the 2025-2026 fiscal year. They also continued the inter-district open enrollment policy without revision.

Two significant service agreements were approved: a placement at Gateway High School costing $27,030 and another at the Positive Education Program Service at Chesnutt for $61,824.

Community Events

The board announced a PTA dine-to-donate event at Handles Ice Cream on September 9, where teachers and staff will serve as celebrity scoopers. The event will also provide an opportunity to meet interim superintendent Steve Marlo.

The Twinsburg Baseball League’s annual MVP event for players with physical or developmental challenges is scheduled for Saturday at Liberty Park from 3-6 p.m.
