Summit County Sheriff’s Office Secures $352,968 in Traffic Safety Grants

Funding will support impaired driving enforcement and education programs across the county

The Summit County Sheriff’s Office has secured $352,968.32 in grant funding from the Ohio Traffic Safety Office to enhance safe driving education and enforcement efforts targeting impaired driving on local roadways.

The federal funding originates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation, with statewide administration handled by the Ohio Department of Public Safety, Ohio State Highway Patrol, and the Ohio Traffic Safety Office.

Sheriff Kandy Fatheree emphasized the importance of the funding for the region. “Summit County is one of the busiest crossroads in our state, and these funds are crucial to helping us keep motorists safe. The ultimate goal is to save lives and reduce injuries,” she said.

The grant allocation breaks down into three distinct programs:

The OVI Task Force receives $187,500 to support a partnership between the Sheriff’s Office and local law enforcement agencies countywide. The task force works to reduce impaired driving through checkpoints and targeted activities.

The Impaired Driving Enforcement Program and Selective Traffic Enforcement Program receives $71,968.32. These programs focus on reducing traffic-related fatalities through high-visibility enforcement operations.

Summit Safe Communities receives $93,500 to fund an educational initiative covering seatbelt usage, impaired driving, distracted driving, motorcycle safety, and related topics.
