SOLON — A 3-year-old boy died Saturday afternoon after being found unresponsive in a pond behind his Capilano Drive home in the Signature I development.
Solon police responded to the gated residential community around 1:20 p.m. on Nov. 8 after the child’s father, 46, called to report his son missing from their residence. Officers immediately began searching inside and around the home.
The boy was discovered shortly after officers arrived in a pond located behind the residence. He was unresponsive. Officers began life-saving measures on scene before Solon Fire Medics arrived to provide additional medical assistance and transport him to an area hospital. The child died after life-saving attempts were unsuccessful.
The child’s parents were not home at the time of the incident but arrived shortly after police. Other adult family members were caring for the boy and another child, a baby, at the residence prior to the tragedy.
Solon police said there is no evidence suggesting anything other than a terrible accident occurred. The case remains open and will be reviewed by the department’s Detective Bureau.
Capilano Drive is located in the Signature I development, a private and gated residential community. Police issued a statement due to the significant emergency response Saturday afternoon and potential community questions. Authorities emphasized there is no threat to the community and asked for privacy for the family during this difficult time.
The Solon Police Department expressed condolences to the family in their official statement, saying the hearts of their officers are with them.
