Felony Warrant and Meth Pipe Recovery
- Nov. 15 – Ravenna officers located a man who was wanted on a felony warrant out of the Portage County Sheriff’s Office.
- During detention, officers reported finding a glass pipe with residue in his pocket.
- A field test on the pipe reportedly tested positive for methamphetamine.
- The man was taken to the Portage County Justice Center and charged with felony possession of drugs (F-5). A copy of the charge was delivered to the jail.
OVI: Reckless Driving, Lane Violation, Refused Breath Test
- Nov. 13 – Police received a call about a reckless driver in the city.
- Officers located the vehicle and reported that the driver failed to use a turn signal and crossed over the double yellow line while turning.
- After the traffic stop, officers noted signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, glossy, bloodshot eyes, and a strong odor of alcohol.
- During standardized field sobriety tests, the driver reportedly showed 6 out of 6 clues on the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test and 6 out of 8 clues on the Walk-and-Turn test.
- The driver refused to perform the One-Leg Stand, was taken into custody, and later refused to provide a breath sample after being read and shown the BMV 2255 form.
- Police noted that he refused to arrange a ride from the police department and was transported to jail, issued his citation and BMV 2255 paperwork.
Traffic Stop Leads to Warrant Arrest
- Nov. 16 – An officer stopped a vehicle that had no license plate light and expired registration.
- A records check showed the registered owner had active warrants.
- After confirming the driver’s identity with a driver’s license, police confirmed the warrants.
- The driver was taken into custody, and officers met with the wanting agency to transfer custody.
Suspicious Activity Call Ends in Cocaine Charge
- Nov. 17 – Officers were dispatched to a local fast-food restaurant in Ravenna on a report of suspicious activity.
- The caller, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, told officers they could search him and his vehicle.
- During the search, officers reported finding a burnt pen tube containing suspected narcotic powder.
- A field test reportedly tested positive for cocaine.
- The caller was taken into custody and incarcerated at the Portage County Jail without incident.
Domestic Violence Report and Later Surrender
- Nov. 15 – A woman arrived at the police station to report domestic violence.
- She told officers that the suspect put his hand over her mouth and upper chest during an incident at a residence.
- Officers documented scratches on both sides of her face, marks on the right side of her neck, and redness on her upper chest.
- The suspect had left the residence before officers could take him into custody. Police reported that a probable cause warrant would be sought for his arrest.
- Nov. 17 – The same man later turned himself in at the Portage County Courts.
- The warrant was then recalled by the court, and he was directed to the police department for booking.
- At the station, he was served with a copy of the complaint, fingerprinted, and released.
Neighbor Dispute Leads to Assault Complaint
- Nov. 18 – A Ravenna man went to a neighbor’s home to confront him about allegedly yelling at his wife.
- According to the report, when the neighbor came outside, the man pushed him, and the neighbor said he was then punched and wrestled to the ground.
- The neighbor reported multiple visible injuries and provided a written statement, telling officers he wanted charges filed.
- The victim later went to the station to sign charges, and officers noted that a complaint would be sent to Portage County Court for the man to be summoned by mail.
Threatening Phone Call After Domestic Dispute
- Nov. 15 – A woman contacted police after her ex-boyfriend allegedly showed up outside her home and would not leave.
- She told officers she called the police, and after he left, he called her by phone and threatened to kill her for calling law enforcement.
- The woman provided a written statement, told officers she was afraid of the threat, and said she wished to pursue charges.
- A complaint was completed and signed at the station and was to be sent to Portage County Courts to be issued as a summons.
Misuse of 911
- Nov. 14 – Ravenna officers reported that a man called 911 several times and repeatedly hung up on the dispatcher.
- When the dispatcher called back, the man reportedly asked to be transferred to a police department in another state.
- According to the report, he had already been told earlier not to call 911 for non-emergencies.
- Police charged him with misuse of 911 (a misdemeanor of the 4th degree) and noted that a summons would be sent.
Domestic Violence and Assault on Officer
- Nov. 14 – Officers were dispatched to an apartment on East Main Street in Ravenna for a domestic violence report.
- The victim, identified in the report as the suspect’s spouse, told officers he struck her several times, choked her, and dragged her back into the apartment when she tried to get away.
- While officers were interviewing the victim, they woke the suspect, who was asleep on the couch.
- Police say the man became very aggravated, then charged at officers and assaulted one of them.
- After a struggle that resulted in an injury to an officer, the suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Portage County Justice Center.
