Solon Police Reports: Driver Flees Traffic Stop, Elderly Woman Loses $12,000 in Scam

Traffic stop leads to chase, scams target elderly residents

FLEEING AND ELUDING

SOLON, Ohio โ€“ย  A 28-year-old Glenwillow man was arrested Dec. 1 after fleeing a traffic stop on Arbordale Avenue. An officer stopped a red Chevrolet sedan around 7:30 a.m. for traveling 46 mph in a 25 mph zone. The officer observed signs of possible impairment and requested the driver exit for sobriety testing. The driver became argumentative and refused to comply. When the officer opened his door, the driver closed it and attempted to leave. A backup officer deployed a tire deflation device, which the driver struck as he fled. Officers pursued the vehicle onto Linden Drive but lost sight of it at SOM Center Road. A Glenwillow officer spotted the car minutes later on Pettibone near Harper Road with a flat tire and detained the suspect. The man faces charges of fleeing and eluding, obstructing official business, speeding and no seatbelt.

THEFT FROM AUTO

Over $2,000 in power tools were stolen from a work van at Outdoor Lighting Perspectives on Richmond Road. An employee reported the theft Dec. 1 around 7:30 a.m. The Nissan van had been parked outside over the weekend. Staff discovered a shattered window Monday morning and found various Rigid power tools and battery equipment missing. No suspects.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

A 43-year-old Solon man was arrested Dec. 2 following a domestic incident on the 35000 block of Aurora Road. Officers responded around 10 p.m. after a third party reported concerns about a possible assault. The caller said a 33-year-old woman had posted a Facebook photo showing a severe lip injury. When officers checked on the woman’s welfare, she reported her boyfriend struck her with his knee during an argument, causing her to fall and injure her lip. The man was arrested and charged with domestic violence. Paramedics treated the woman at the scene and released her.

FRAUD

A 78-year-old Aurora woman lost $12,000 Dec. 4 in an elaborate scam. The victim received a call from someone claiming to represent Chase Bank’s fraud department, who said someone had fraudulently withdrawn $9,000 from her savings account. To stop the transaction, she was instructed to withdraw $12,000 in cash immediately. The scammers stayed on the phone as she drove to the Chase Bank branch on SOM Center Road and withdrew the money. She was then directed to meet an FBI agent at the Dunkin Donuts next door around 2 p.m. A man exited a black SUV, identified himself as Agent Kyle, showed a badge and collected the cash before leaving. The victim reported the incident to police around 5:12 p.m. She described the suspect as a possibly mixed-race male, approximately 5 feet 4 inches tall. Detectives are investigating.

A 73-year-old Solon woman reported Dec. 5 that her mailed credit card payment was stolen and altered. She mailed a check for $166 in November. A month later, she learned the check had been cashed by an unknown individual for $9,800. She could not recall whether she used the Solon or Twinsburg post office. Her bank required a police report to reverse the charges. Detectives are investigating.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT

Two Cleveland men were cited for disorderly conduct Dec. 5 after fighting at Kids Empire on Kruse Drive. Officers responded around 6:23 p.m. to a report of a fight. The men, both guests at a children’s birthday party, knew each other and got into an argument. When one man began recording the other with his phone, the second man swatted it away. The confrontation escalated into a physical fight outside. Both men, ages 21 and 22, sustained visible scrapes but declined medical treatment. No other attendees were injured. Officers issued criminal trespass warnings for both men.

ATTEMPTED THEFT

An alarm system prevented the theft of a $2,199 snow blower at Tractor Supply on Kruse Drive late Dec. 6. Officers responded around 11:22 p.m. after an alarm company reported a burglary and cable alarm. The store was locked and secure. A manager informed officers someone had attempted to cut a cable lock securing a snow blower displayed outside, triggering the alarm. Officers will review surveillance video. No suspects.
