SOLON, Ohio – The Solon Police Department handled a variety of incidents this past week, ranging from a weapons arrest following a traffic stop to a physical confrontation between juveniles at the local library. Officers also investigated a suspicious package containing suspected narcotics and an OVI-related crash on US 422.
Suspicious Activity
On February 9 at approximately 1:03 p.m., a homeowner in the Liberty Hills development contacted police after discovering an unexpected package. The woman, who had already moved out of the residence, found a USPS bubble envelope addressed to an unknown individual. Upon opening it, she discovered two vacuum-sealed pouches containing substances she believed to be illegal drugs. Officers seized the contraband, which is suspected to be less than five grams of Ketamine and cocaine. While the home showed no signs of unauthorized entry, the investigation into the origin of the package remains ongoing.
Disorderly Conduct
Police were called to the Solon Library parking lot on Portz Parkway on February 11 at 3:49 p.m. to investigate reports of a fight. Arriving officers found a crowd of young people surrounding two 15-year-old girls engaged in a physical altercation. The crowd was dispersed, and the two Solon High School students were released to their parents. While no emergency medical treatment was required for their minor injuries, the SPD Juvenile Officer is coordinating with school administration regarding disciplinary action. Minor misdemeanor charges for disorderly conduct are being considered through the Cuyahoga County Juvenile Court.
Operating a Vehicle Under the Influence (OVI)
Late in the evening on February 11, officers responded to a single-vehicle accident on US 422 westbound near Harper Road. A Honda CR-V had traveled off the right side of the roadway and struck several trees. The driver, a 28-year-old Bedford Heights man, admitted to consuming alcohol prior to the crash. After performing poorly on field sobriety tests, he was arrested and transported to the Solon Jail, where he refused a breath test. He was cited for OVI and failure to control, and his driver’s license was suspended.
Weapon Offense
A traffic stop on February 14 at 9:16 p.m. led to a felony weapons arrest. An officer stopped a Dodge Durango at Harper and Bainbridge Roads for an improper turn. Neither the driver nor the passenger possessed a valid license. While the vehicle was being prepared for towing, an officer discovered a loaded semi-automatic handgun with a defaced serial number hidden under the driver’s seat. The 49-year-old driver from Garfield Heights, who was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to a prior conviction, was arrested. He faces charges of having weapons under disability, improper handling of a firearm, and possessing a defaced firearm.
