Solon Police Blotter: Thefts, Juvenile Mischief and Firearms Charge

SOLON, Ohio – Solon police handled a series of incidents between Feb. 17 and Feb. 22, ranging from high-end vehicle thefts and juvenile mischief to drug and firearm-related offenses, according to the department’s weekly report.

Fictitious Check Used in BMW Purchase

A warrant has been issued in connection with a vehicle theft reported Feb. 17 at 11:29 a.m. at Davis Automotive, 6035 Kruse Drive. A dealership manager told police that a man purchased a new BMW in early February after passing a bank credit check and providing a down payment by check. The check was later determined to be fictitious or drawn on insufficient funds. The suspect failed to make good on the payment and did not return the vehicle despite requests to do so. The BMW was located the following day in Canton, where local police towed the unoccupied vehicle for safekeeping. A warrant for fourth-degree felony theft was issued for the suspect, a 38-year-old man from East Palestine.

Four Suspects Steal Alcohol, Candy from Sheetz

Officers are investigating a theft reported Feb. 17 at 8:20 p.m. at Sheetz, 5950 Harper Road. A store manager reported that three men entered the store and removed nine cases of Cutwater alcoholic beverages from the beer cooler and three cases of candy bars from shelves. The suspects fled in a silver Mitsubishi Outlander driven by a fourth individual. The three suspects were described as males wearing head coverings, including a du-rag, hoodie, and ski mask. Police were notified approximately 15 minutes after the incident, and the case remains under investigation.

Juveniles Accused of Throwing Rocks at Cars

On Feb. 18 at 3:22 p.m., officers responded to the 7400 block of Royal Portrush Drive for a report of children throwing rocks at passing vehicles. Police located all parties involved and learned that two Solon boys, ages 7 and 8, admitted to throwing objects at a passing car. The driver, a 24-year-old woman from Middlefield, declined to press charges but requested reimbursement for reported undercarriage damage to her vehicle. The department’s juvenile officer will follow up, and the parents were advised.

Pills Discovered During Booking at Jail

On Feb. 19 at 5 p.m., Solon officers traveled to the Shaker Heights Police Department to serve a misdemeanor warrant on a 42-year-old Cleveland man who was in custody there for failure to appear on a traffic offense. After transporting him to Solon Jail, officers discovered two unmarked blue pills during the booking process. The pills will be sent to a lab for analysis. Additional charges, including possible fifth-degree felony conveyance of drugs into a jail, are pending lab results.

Protection Order Violation Following Traffic Stop

A Feb. 20 traffic stop at 10:01 a.m. at Miles Road and Glenwood Road resulted in an arrest for violating a protection order. An officer stopped a silver Chevrolet for a window tint violation and learned the driver had a suspended license. The vehicle was registered to a woman listed as the protected party in a Garfield Heights Municipal Court protection order. The driver, a 30-year-old man from Cleveland, was the subject of that order. He told the officer he believed the order had been canceled. He was arrested and charged with first-degree misdemeanor violation of a protection order.

Loaded Firearm Found During Traffic Stop

On Feb. 21 at 10:15 p.m., an officer stopped a black Chevrolet Trailblazer after observing it turn left in front of oncoming traffic while traveling eastbound on Aurora Road at Solon Road. The driver said the vehicle’s brakes were failing. A tow truck was called, and when the driver exited the vehicle, he told officers he did not have any weapons. However, a loaded semiautomatic pistol was found under the driver’s seat. The driver, a 22-year-old man from Bedford, was cited for improper handling of a firearm, driving under suspension, and reckless operation.

Man Found Passed Out Behind Wheel on Cannon Road

A 23-year-old Solon man was arrested early Feb. 22 after being found asleep behind the wheel of a running vehicle in a driveway on the 28000 block of Cannon Road. At 6:10 a.m., a resident reported a suspicious vehicle parked with its lights on for approximately 45 minutes. Officers located a blue Ford SUV running with the driver asleep or unconscious. After attempts to wake him failed, officers used a lockout tool to open the door. The driver awoke and reportedly believed he was in Kent. Officers observed a container labeled Michelob Ultra inside the vehicle and detected an odor of alcohol. The driver refused field sobriety tests and a urine screening. He was charged with physical control of a vehicle while under the influence.
