AKRON, Ohio – On Wednesday, February 25, Governor Mike DeWine announced that the Summit County Sheriff’s Office has officially achieved accreditation through the Ohio Collaborative Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (OCLEAP). This prestigious recognition places the office among an elite group of only 24 law enforcement agencies out of more than 900 across the State of Ohio to meet these rigorous professional standards.
The accreditation, led by the Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board, is designed to identify agencies that exceed state benchmarks in critical areas such as bias-free policing, crisis intervention, use of force, and community engagement. Governor DeWine noted that the achievement serves as a signal to residents that their local law enforcement demonstrates exceptional professionalism and meets the state’s highest expectations for public safety.
Sheriff Kandy Fatheree expressed immense pride in the department’s achievement, stating that the accreditation proves the office is not only following best practices but actively helping to shape them statewide. To maintain this status, the Sheriff’s Office will undergo annual documentation reviews and regular on-site assessments to ensure continued compliance with the program’s high standards of excellence and accountability.
