GATES MILLS, Ohio – The Gates Mills Police Department addressed a range of community safety issues during the final week of February, including a significant speeding violation captured by automated enforcement and emergency assistance for a motorist trapped by winter weather. Between Feb. 21 and Feb. 28, officers also responded to reports of illegal open burning and domestic disputes, maintaining public order and safety within the village.
High-Speed Violation Recorded on Mayfield Road
On Feb. 23, a Cleveland Heights vehicle owner was cited for a significant speeding violation after being recorded traveling 102 mph westbound on Mayfield Road. The infraction was captured by a Mayfield Road speed camera, a tool utilized by the department to monitor the high-volume thoroughfare. According to Village of Gates Mills municipal guidelines, automated photo enforcement is used to maintain safety on Mayfield Road, where excessive speeds pose a risk to both motorists and pedestrians.
Emergency Assistance on Wilson Mills Hill
Severe weather conditions on Feb. 22 prompted a 911 call from a female motorist who became stuck on the Wilson Mills hill. The steep grade of the hill often becomes treacherous during Northeast Ohio winters. Responding officers arrived on the scene and successfully assisted the driver up the incline, ensuring she could continue her travels safely. The department frequently monitors this area during snow and ice events to prevent multi-vehicle accidents.
Response to Illegal Open Burning
An officer was flagged down by a resident on Feb. 25 regarding potential illegal open burning at a property on Fox Hill. Upon arrival, the officer and the Gates Mills Fire Department discovered contractors working at the residence had ignited a small, contained burn of materials. Under Ohio Administrative Code 3745.19, open burning of processed materials and certain wastes is prohibited within village limits. The fire was extinguished, and the parties involved were formally advised of the local and state prohibitions.
