AKRON, Ohio – County Executive Ilene Shapiro and Summit County Animal Control have launched the Rainy Days & Rescue Strays adoption promotion, running from April 1 through May 3, 2026. This spring initiative reduces the standard $94 dog adoption fee to just $28, providing an affordable opportunity for residents across Northeast Ohio to adopt a fully vetted pet. The program aims to increase shelter placement rates during the wet spring months while ensuring all adopted animals are healthy and legally registered.
Comprehensive Services Included in Rainy Days & Rescue Strays
The Rainy Days & Rescue Strays event is not merely a discount, but a comprehensive health and safety package for new pet owners. Every dog adopted through this promotion is microchipped and has undergone a rigorous medical screening process, including bloodwork, flea treatments, and intestinal de-worming. Additionally, the $28 fee covers the cost of spay or neuter surgery and vaccinations. In 2025, Summit County Animal Control successfully facilitated the adoption or redemption of nearly 700 dogs, and this promotion looks to build on that momentum by also including a 2026 Summit County Dog License in the adoption cost.
Location and Hours for Rainy Days & Rescue Strays
To participate in the Rainy Days & Rescue Strays promotion, interested adopters should visit the Animal Control facility at 250 Opportunity Parkway in Akron. Community Impact of the Rainy Days & Rescue Strays Initiative
Beyond the Rainy Days & Rescue Strays event, the Division of Animal Control serves the Northeast Ohio region through various support programs, such as the Community Pet Food Pantry, which assists an average of 200 households per event. This adoption drive is a key component of County Executive Shapiro’s broader effort to maintain animal welfare and support responsible pet ownership within the community. Potential owners can preview adoptable pets online via the county’s official website or social media channels prior to visiting the shelter.
