Summer Youth Employment Program, Paid Work Experience, and Career Development

Summit County Executive Ilene Shapiro and DJFS open applications for the 2026 Summer Youth Employment Program.

The Summit County Summer Youth Employment Program is a TANF-funded initiative providing residents ages 16–18 with paid work experience at $15 per hour for up to 20 hours per week. Applications for the 2026 season opened on April 1, offering eligible youth from low-income households across Northeast Ohio the opportunity to develop professional skills in various career fields starting June 8.

Eligibility Requirements for the Summer Youth Employment Program

To participate in the 2026 Summer Youth Employment Program, applicants must be residents of Summit County between the ages of 16 and 18. Because the program is funded through the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) block grant, household income cannot exceed 200% of the federal poverty level. Positions are limited and filled on a first-come, first-served basis, making early application critical for families in Northeast Ohio looking to secure a spot.

Building the Workforce Pipeline Through Paid Experience

Participants in the Summer Youth Employment Program will earn a competitive wage of $15 per hour while gaining hands-on exposure to local employers. The program, which officially begins on June 8, 2026, is designed to go beyond simple labor by integrating mentorship and guidance. According to County Executive Ilene Shapiro, the initiative is a cornerstone of the region’s workforce development, aimed at building confidence and establishing a professional foundation for the next generation of workers.

Collaborative Support From Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates (JOG)

The Summit County Department of Job and Family Services (DJFS) administers the Summer Youth Employment Program in partnership with Jobs for Ohio’s Graduates (JOG). This collaboration ensures that youth receive professional support throughout their summer tenure. Beyond the immediate financial benefit, JOG helps participants explore future career pathways and long-term vocational success. Interested families can apply online via the Youth Success Summit portal or contact JOG directly at 330-374-9477.
