A 17-year-old female student at Buchtel High School was arrested Monday after a school resource officer discovered a loaded 9mm pistol in her bag during routine security screening.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the deputy noticed what appeared to be a firearm while screening the student’s belongings on April 14. The school was immediately placed on lockdown as a precautionary measure.
“The deputy located the loaded 9mm pistol in her bag. The firearm was secured and taken as evidence,” officials reported in a statement.
The student now faces charges of Illegal Conveyance of a Deadly Weapon in a School, a fourth-degree felony. Following her arrest, she was transported to the Summit County Juvenile Detention Center.
Authorities have not released additional information about the incident or potential motives, as the investigation involves a juvenile.
