Fawn Season Reminder: Leave Baby Deer Alone

Well-meaning residents urged not to "rescue" seemingly abandoned fawns

Police departments are reminding residents that baby deer spotted alone are likely not in need of rescue, as calls about seemingly abandoned fawns have increased recently.

Wildlife Safety

Police report receiving multiple calls about fawns found lying in yards, fields, and near sidewalks throughout the area. However, officials stress that these young deer are following natural behavior patterns rather than being abandoned by their mothers.

The spotted, young deer remain stationary during daylight hours while their mothers forage for food nearby. This hiding behavior serves as protection from predators and is completely normal for fawns.

Residents are advised to avoid touching, feeding, or attempting to move any fawn they encounter. Police emphasize that human intervention is only necessary if the animal appears injured, is located in a roadway, or faces immediate danger.

For wildlife-related questions or concerns, residents can contact the Ohio Department of Natural Resources at 1-800-WILDLIFE.

The advisory comes as spring brings increased wildlife activity throughout northeast Ohio communities.
